ATTENDANCE

Despite seasonal weather conditions and layoff periods common in the construction industry, D & D West strives to maintain a productive year-around work schedule. To maintain this operation, it is imperative that a reliable work force is available and employees report for work as scheduled. Employees' absences for sickness, personal affairs, etc., reduce D & D West's effectiveness and must be kept to a minimum level. Also, because workers act as a crew and one employee's attendance impacts the performance of the entire crew, the following attendance guidelines are to be followed:

Tardiness:

  1. Tardiness is defined as reporting for work later than 15 minutes past the scheduled starting time. A tardy condition may exist for up to two hours. If a tardy period extends beyond two hours, it will be considered an absence (defined below).
  2. In the event an employee expects to be tardy, D & D West must be notified 30 minutes prior to the start of the scheduled work time for the tardiness to be considered excused. Any tardiness not reported to D & D West in this time frame will be considered unexcused.
  3. A maximum of two excused tardinesses per week will be allowed. In the event more than two excused tardinesses occur per week, the third tardiness will be treated as an unexcused tardiness.
  4. A maximum of one unexcused tardiness per month will be allowed before employees receive a warning concerning attendance.
  5. In the event of unexcused tardinesses, the following actions will occur:
  • Second Unexcused Tardiness in 1-Month Period Verbal Warning
  • Third Unexcused Tardiness in 1-Month Period Written Warning
  • Fourth Unexcused Tardiness in 1-Month Period Dismissal

Absence:

  1. Absence is defined as a period of time when employees are not present at work. One absence will be charged for each continuous period of time away from work, regardless of the number of work days missed.
  2. Vacation time or other leave from work that is authorized by D & D West will be excused. However, when other leave is authorized, employees may be requested to make up the time missed by working beyond normal scheduled work times. If time is not made-up as directed by D & D West, this time will be considered unexcused.
  3. In the event an employee expects to be absent from work, D & D West must be notified 30 minutes prior to the start of the scheduled work time for the absence to be considered excused. This notification must occur for each work day of the absence period. Any absence not reported to D & D West in this time frame will be considered unexcused.
  4. Excused absences need to be minimized and should not exceed one per month. In the event more than one excused absence occurs in a one-month period, the additional absences will be treated as unexcused or D& D West may allow make-up time.
  5. In the event of unexcused absences, the following actions will occur:
  • First Unexcused Absence in 12-Month Period Verbal Warning
  • Second Unexcused Absence in 12-Month Period Written Warning
  • Third Unexcused Absence in 12-Month Period Dismissal

For temporary periods when work is not sufficient to keep all employees active, D & D West obtains unemployment insurance benefits, available through Iowa Workforce Development.
