History
D&D West Homes, Inc., was originally established as D&D West Home Improvements in 1978, following Darrell West's completion of the four-year vocational training in construction and woodworking offered by Des Moines Technical High School (currently Des Moines Central Campus). For approximately 10 years, Darrell operated the company as a home improvement service, including such items as remodeling, roofing, siding, window, and door replacement, and garage construction. During this time, work was primarily completed by Darrell West personally, with occasional use of contract labor for assistance.
D&D West Home Improvements continued to build single-family housing until 1991, when the first contracts with a local builder for townhouse construction were secured. At that time, D&D West Home Improvements had an average workforce of 7 employees. The townhouse market initiated a production mode of operation for the company, and additional workers were needed. In the next four years, the workforce was expanded to an average of 15 workers.
In 1996, Carla West joined the company full-time, after 17 years with Des Moines Water Works, serving as Administrative Assistant to the General Manager of the utility. In prior years, Carla performed the business operations in a part-time, after-business-hours approach. The growth in 1995 and 1996 required this change in order to properly support the work force and company needs. Carla brought to the company supervisory and project management skills, as well as a strong background in computer technologies.
D&D West Home Improvements experienced its first significant peak operating year in 1996, ending the year with a workforce of 37 employees. The company worked almost exclusively for a local builder with a substantial share in the townhouse market of the metropolitan area.
In 1998, D&D West Homes, Inc., was established as a corporation, and the pilot work for the panelizing operation was initiated. By 1999 year-end, plans were underway for the first D&D West Homes plant production facility. Walls were delivered from the first West Des Moines, IA plant in June of 2000.
D&D West Homes, Inc. continued to refine production operations and increase the employee population for the next several years. By 2003, it was clear the organization had outgrown its existing facility and construction of a new 31,500 SF facility was began. In April 2004, the current Grimes production facility was opened delivering wall panels to 6 local production builders at more than 12 project locations.
